Almost nobody does anything for the reason they say they do. Including me.

This isn’t cynicism — it’s just observation. We construct narratives after the fact. We act first, then explain. The explanation sounds clean. The reality was messier.

I’ve watched founders pitch “mission-driven” startups while clearly optimizing for status. I’ve done the same thing in different clothes.

What this means

It means the stated reason is rarely the whole reason. Usually it’s a polished version of something more uncomfortable — fear, pride, loneliness, ambition with no clean label.

Understanding this about people doesn’t make you manipulative. It makes you more honest — with them and with yourself.
